Opposition parties have fiercely criticized the BJP-led Maharashtra government following violent clashes that occurred in Nagpur on Monday. Aditya Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), condemned the incident as indicative of a breakdown in state governance in the hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Thackeray stated, “The law and order in the state has collapsed like never before. Nagpur, the home city of the CM and Home Minister, is facing this crisis.”
Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi echoed this sentiment, claiming that the Maharashtra government is jeopardizing the state’s stability for political gain, leading it toward a potential crisis. She commented, “This is happening in Nagpur, the constituency of the Home Minister and Chief Minister.”
Congress leader Pawan Khera also voiced his concerns, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the violence in Mahal, a historic region of Nagpur. He pointed out, “In Nagpur’s 300-year history, no riot has occurred. We must question why this situation arose. The BJP holds power both at the Centre and in the State. If VHP and Bajrang Dal organized protests against Aurangzeb’s tomb, why did the government fail to ensure law and order?”
Khera urged the people of Nagpur to uphold peace, stating, “A game is being played here, distorting our 300-year history. We should not fall victim to this provocation. Maintaining peace is crucial, as some political parties attempt to manipulate these situations for their benefit.”
The clashes reportedly erupted during a protest led by VHP and Bajrang Dal, who demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The opposition is now calling for accountability and swift action to restore order in the region.
In light of the disturbances, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to citizens for cooperation with local authorities to ensure peace is restored.
