St Helens’ star hooker Tara Jones has announced her retirement from playing, opting to transition into a full-time match official role with the Rugby Football League (RFL). Jones, the leading appearance maker for St Helens Women’s team, made history in April by becoming the first woman to officiate a senior RFL men’s fixture, overseeing the Betfred League One match between Oldham and Cornwall at Boundary Park.
At just 28 years old and with 14 caps for England, Jones has already served as a touch-judge in several Betfred Super League matches. She shared her decision with her teammates just before the Women’s Super League Grand Final against York Valkyrie.
Phil Bentham, head of match officials at the RFL, acknowledged the significance of Jones’s decision: “Retiring from a remarkable club and international playing career right after the Women’s Super League Grand Final is monumental for her.
Jones has enjoyed a remarkable season as an official, notably becoming the first female referee for men’s League One and serving as a touch judge in men’s Super League matches. Her appointment marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to join the RFL’s full-time officiating squad since its establishment in 2006.
England Women’s head coach Stuart Barrow praised Jones’s contributions: “Tara has been an exceptional player at a crucial time for Women’s Rugby League, playing an integral role in our 2022 World Cup campaign. Balancing her playing career while evolving as a match official showcases remarkable dedication and commitment.”
This transition not only highlights Jones’ talents but also paves the way for greater representation of women in officiating roles within Rugby League.
