South Korean football star Hwang Ui-jo has issued an apology following revelations that he secretly recorded sexual encounters with his partners without their consent.
The 31-year-old striker faces legal consequences after prosecutors revealed that he filmed illicit encounters with two women on four separate occasions between June and September 2022. During his initial court hearing in Seoul, Hwang expressed deep remorse for disappointing those who have supported him.
Hwang recently transitioned from Nottingham Forest in England to Alanyaspor in Turkey. The scandal initially surfaced when his sister-in-law attempted to blackmail him by sharing the videos on social media last June. She was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison for her actions after Hwang pursued legal action against her.
Despite his sister-in-law’s conviction, prosecutors have proceeded with charges against Hwang for the illegal filming. To protect the privacy of the women involved, prosecutors declined to disclose their identities.
In court, Hwang affirmed his commitment to responsible behavior, stating, “I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer.” He added, “I sincerely apologise to the victims who have been affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me.”
