Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna announced the potential revival of discussions regarding the merger of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) with Indian Railways, with a decision expected post-Maharashtra Assembly elections.
After leading a review meeting at the Rail Soudha in Hubballi, Somanna confirmed that a previous proposal to merge KRCL, which encompasses parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa, faced opposition in Maharashtra. The merger proposal will be revisited after the elections.
During the meeting, various railway projects were evaluated, including key initiatives like the new rail lines from Ginigera to Raichur, Kadur to Chikkamagaluru, and the doubling of existing lines such as Hotgi-Kudgi-Gadag. Officials were instructed to prioritize the completion of these projects by June 2027.
When asked about the state government’s financial involvement in these projects, Somanna stated, “It seems improbable for the Congress government to share costs.” He emphasized that providing the necessary land for the projects would be a more realistic expectation from the state government.
Focus on Hubballi-Ankola Line
Somanna mentioned ongoing discussions with the Union Minister for Forest concerning the acquisition of forest land essential for the Hubballi-Ankola railway line. He asserted that the project’s implementation would accelerate after the Maharashtra elections.
He disclosed that the land acquisition for the Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi railway line is projected to conclude by the end of December. Once the land is secured, the project completion is anticipated within two years, though costs may rise from ₹927 crore to approximately ₹1,200 crore.
During the meeting, MLA Mahesh Tenginakai suggested establishing a railway line for goods transport from APMC Yard in Hubballi, which Somanna responded to positively, contingent on the availability of necessary land.
In response to a proposal regarding employment for families who have given up land for railway projects, Somanna noted that prior provisions existed, and he would facilitate discussions with higher authorities if a formal proposal is submitted.
Additionally, Tenginakai requested adjustments to the schedule of the Vande Bharat Express between Hubballi-Dharwad and Bengaluru. Currently departing at 1:15 p.m., he proposed a new departure time of 5:30 a.m. from Dharwad and 5 p.m. for the return trip from Bengaluru. Somanna assured attendees he would address this scheduling concern with the relevant authorities.
Senior officials, including the General Manager of South Western Railway and the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad, were in attendance at the meeting.
