Ukrainian officials have reported a new missile attack by Russia on Kyiv, which has resulted in significant damage to a building housing several diplomatic missions. This attack follows a deadly strike in the Kursk region of Russia, where officials have confirmed that six individuals, including a child, lost their lives due to Ukrainian fire.
The missile strike on Kyiv reportedly targeted a building that hosts diplomatic missions from countries including Albania, Argentina, North Macedonia, Palestine, Portugal, and Montenegro. While it remains unclear if the building was the intended target, at least one person died and nine others sustained injuries in the assault that caused damage to multiple structures in the area.
Witnesses in Kyiv captured the aftermath of the attack, highlighting destroyed residential buildings and shattered windows, particularly at St. Nicholas Cathedral, one of the city’s historic Roman Catholic churches. The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched a total of 65 missiles and drones overnight, with the majority being intercepted.
Local residents expressed their anguish as they assessed the destruction of their homes. One woman, Oksana, shared her disbelief at surviving the attack, recounting the devastation that left her apartment uninhabitable.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the missile strikes were aimed at a Ukrainian Security Service command post, claiming retaliation for a prior attack on a chemical facility in Russia. However, there are widespread suspicions in Kyiv that this attack was a response to the recent killing of a Russian general, further escalating tensions in the region.
As concerns mount about Russia’s potential use of intermediate-range ballistic missiles, Ukrainian authorities issued urgent air alerts for Kyiv, advising residents to take shelter, though these warnings turned out to be false alarms earlier on Friday morning. The ongoing conflict continues to impact the lives of civilians as each side responds in escalating measures.
