Inspiring Sisterhood in Sports Takes Center Stage
The remarkable stories of sisters in sports are gaining traction, reminiscent of the impact made by the legendary Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, who revolutionized women’s tennis with their power and athleticism.
From tennis to basketball, sibling rivalries are proving to be catalysts for extraordinary achievements. Nigeria’s rising stars, Bernice and Anna Onoriode, are now stepping into the spotlight, showcasing their dedication and passion in athletics and chess.
Hailing from Kaduna State with roots in Delta and Anambra, the Onoriode sisters began their sports journey three years ago under the guidance of their father, Felix, a well-respected athletics coach at N-Youth Sports Academy in Abuja.
Their talent was evident in September when they faced off in the preliminary rounds of the chess event at the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State. The 13-year-old Bernice represented Delta State, while Anna played for Kaduna State. Bernice triumphed, ultimately securing a silver medal.
“It was a profoundly emotional moment for me,” Felix shared, reflecting on the significance of the match. “I anticipated this clash, knowing the competitive spirit between them. I stayed close to manage the atmosphere, aware of Anna’s determination to win.”
Despite frequently playing together, this marked their first official competition against one another. “I was winning, and I got overconfident,” Anna admitted, acknowledging their past games where they both achieved victories.
“In sports, once we are competing, it’s just about winning,” Bernice added.
Their decision to represent different states stemmed from Bernice’s previous disappointment in attempting to play for Team Kaduna in 2022, which had dropped its female chess team. Her success in qualifying for Delta came after proactive steps to secure her participation.
In addition to chess, Bernice excels in athletics, particularly sprints and long jumps, with impressive accolades including five gold medals from the MTN Champs and a bronze at the national finals.
“Athletics is my main focus, but I also enjoy chess, scrabble, and karate. This was my second medal in chess, following a bronze at the 2023 National Youth Games,” Bernice explained.
Anna, on the other hand, is concentrated on chess and scrabble, as she aspires to carve out a niche in her chosen sport. “I prefer chess because I don’t have the endurance for athletics like my sister does. Our goal is to be the best, regardless of the sport,” Anna expressed.
The sisterly rivalry propels both Bernice and Anna forward, with Felix adeptly balancing support and competition in their training. “I aim to let them enjoy the game and see where it takes us. Encouraging them in chess was one of my best parenting decisions, helping Bernice improve her focus,” he noted.
As the Onoriode sisters continue to shine, comparisons to the illustrious Williams and Ogwumike sisters are emerging. With a strong familial bond and a commitment to mutual upliftment, Bernice and Anna are set to make their mark in the world of sports.
