The conflict between Marvel and Beau DeMayo, the former showrunner of X-Men ’97, has intensified as Marvel has removed DeMayo’s credit for Season 2 of the animated series. The revival of the beloved 1990s X-Men series was recently nominated for an Emmy, but DeMayo was cut from the project just weeks before its debut on Disney+.
While the reasons for DeMayo’s departure ahead of Season 1 were never officially disclosed, he has recently spoken out about being stripped of his credit for Season 2, even though he wrote the initial scripts prior to his exit. In a public statement, DeMayo hinted at feelings of discrimination following his removal.
“Firstly, I’m grateful to have worked on X-Men ’97, collaborating with some incredibly talented individuals,” DeMayo shared on social media. “Creating this revival has been a dream come true, and the fan support has been overwhelming. However, I felt compelled to speak up after leaving the show.”
He also shared fan art featuring him as Cyclops, noting that it was posted in celebration of Pride Month. DeMayo revealed that on June 13, Marvel informed him that his credits for Season 2 were revoked due to the post. He reflected on this as part of a disturbing pattern he experienced while working on X-Men ’97 and Blade. “I’ll have more to say soon but need to step back from social media to find a safer space to express myself,” he stated.
In response, Marvel issued a statement: “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
Though Marvel’s statement does not directly address the removal of DeMayo’s credits, sources indicate that sexual misconduct allegations were the reason for his dismissal. Following his exit, an agreement was reportedly reached with DeMayo regarding his public commentary about the show.
“The truth will be revealed. After their Disney+ issues, Marvel seeks to mislead with contract breach claims over tweets,” DeMayo added. “It’s unfortunate this has transpired, but I urge fans to stay tuned for more updates.”
DeMayo has previously contributed to projects such as the Moon Knight series and worked on a script treatment for an upcoming Blade film. His background also includes work on notable series such as The Witcher.
