INDIANAPOLIS — An 18-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly firing shots inside the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, injuring one person and prompting a swift evacuation of holiday shoppers on Monday night, according to police reports.
Authorities arrested the suspect just hours after the incident, charging him with intimidation with a deadly weapon. As of Tuesday morning, formal charges had not yet been filed.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 8:30 p.m. at the busy shopping destination on the city’s northeast side, coinciding with the holiday rush just two days before Christmas.
Officer Tommy Thompson expressed concern about the safety risks posed to families during this festive season, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Initially, police reported no injuries; however, a man later arrived at a local hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. He is currently in stable condition.
The shooting was linked to a dispute between individuals near one of the mall’s entrances, which left a bullet hole in the wall and damage to an arcade machine.
This incident marks the latest in a troubling pattern at the mall, which has witnessed several shootings in recent years, including a deadly altercation in January 2023 that resulted in the death of a teenager and injuries to another individual.
