Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Abuja on Sunday after participating in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he represented President Bola Tinubu and delivered Nigeria’s National Statement during the General Debate.
During his visit, Shettima engaged in multiple bilateral meetings and took part in a series of sideline events. He is set to join President Tinubu for events celebrating Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.
In addressing world leaders at the UN, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing nations, calling on creditors and multilateral financial institutions to prioritize this issue. He urged the United Nations to enhance multilateralism, advocating for cooperation among member states based on inclusivity and equality.
Represented by Shettima at this crucial global gathering, Tinubu noted that countries in the global South cannot achieve meaningful economic progress without specific concessions and a reassessment of their existing debt challenges.
Furthermore, Nigeria reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening international partnerships and fostering relations with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. During a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA, Shettima highlighted the significance of solidarity among member nations in tackling global challenges, reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to the organization’s objectives while addressing pivotal national issues.
