Sergio Perez Announces Six-Month Break from Racing Following Red Bull Departure
Sergio Perez has confirmed that he will take at least six months off from racing after being released by Red Bull Racing. The 34-year-old Mexican driver, who has had a notable career spanning 14 seasons in Formula 1, faced a challenging 2024 season, which culminated in his replacement by Liam Lawson.
Despite the setback, Perez’s extensive experience and popularity leave the door open for a potential return to F1, particularly if an “interesting project” arises. Speaking at a recent event in his home country, he expressed his optimism for the future, stating, “I don’t know what’s next, but I’m very happy with my life and excited about what’s ahead.”
Perez indicated that his immediate focus is to enjoy personal time, travel, and spend time with family. He emphasized that he will make a decision regarding his racing career in the next six months, hinting at the possibility of re-entering the sport if the right opportunity presents itself.
In 2023, Perez achieved significant success by finishing second behind teammate Max Verstappen, contributing to Red Bull’s historic Drivers’ Championship win. However, a start to 2024 with four podium finishes quickly shifted as he grappled with a downturn in performance, ending the season with only nine points in the last eight races. This decline forced Red Bull to reconsider their driver lineup, ultimately leading to Perez’s exit.
Reflecting on his current circumstances, Perez noted the unexpected sense of freedom he feels after his departure from Red Bull. He stated, “It’s incredible… I feel different as a person, and I’m perfectly happy. I will come back to F1 if it will make me the happiest.”
As fans look forward to the upcoming 2025 Formula 1 season, all eyes will be on Perez to see if he returns to the grid in the future.
