* Tinubu to Inaugurate First Section in May 2025
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is being constructed with a strong focus on safety and economic benefits, as stated by the Minister of Works. David Umahi announced that President Bola Tinubu will inaugurate the first 20 kilometers of the highway in May 2025.
During a recent inspection of the ongoing construction, Umahi emphasized that the contractor is dedicated to completing this phase on schedule.
The highway is designed to include ten lanes, comprising six major lanes and four service lanes. It will feature 24-hour lighting, security posts, medical facilities, and additional infrastructure to enhance its economic viability.
The government is acquiring land along the corridor to support infrastructure development, which will yield returns on investment aside from toll revenue.
Umahi noted, “We will review the contract to include necessary adjustments, such as the construction of a retaining wall in certain areas.” He further mentioned that the entire 750-kilometer stretch will be illuminated with solar streetlights and equipped with security cameras, as well as aesthetic tree planting.
“Our goal is to boost economic activities along the corridor, improve night travel time, and ensure the safety of lives and property,” he stated.
Regarding the inauguration schedule, Umahi confirmed, “For section one of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, we are on track to commission the first 20 kilometers and an additional 10 kilometers in section two.”
“Hi-Tech has divided the complete project, which spans 47 kilometers across six lanes, into five sections, with each section progressing on similar work. This structured approach gives us confidence in completing section one by May 2025, along with an additional 10 kilometers in section two.”
Umahi indicated that preparations for ongoing construction include sand-filling the road for settlement and completing the remaining 17 kilometers before the end of the following year. By May 2025, they expect to finalize 10 additional kilometers in section two, extending to the boundary between Lagos and Ogun States.
The Minister also mentioned that they are in communication with the NNPCL regarding a gas pipeline that runs along the Ondo and Ogun axis. Compensation for affected properties has been addressed, totaling approximately N18 billion.
Umahi highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to national development by announcing that he will inaugurate five key projects in each zone by May 2025. “We have instructed our controllers to focus on a minimum of five projects for commissioning in every zone,” he said.
“Given funding constraints, we may have to commission projects in sections. For instance, the Sokoto-Zamfara-Kastina-Kaduna Highway, with a total length of 750 kilometers, will be prioritized for at least 50 percent completion.” He assured that projects such as the Kano-Kastina Road and the Northern bypass will receive significant attention as part of their strategic initiative.
