Schools across several Kentucky counties were closed Monday as the hunt for a man wanted in connection to a shooting spree, which injured five people, extended into its third day.
Joseph A. Couch, 32, has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and assault following the violent incidents.
Police believe Couch fled to a remote area approximately 9 miles from London after the shootings occurred on Saturday evening.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office has recovered a silver Honda SUV and an AR rifle believed to be involved in the attack, with concerns that the suspect may possess additional firearms.
Authorities located a phone they suspect belongs to Couch; however, the battery had been removed.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Couch, who faces five counts of attempted murder and five counts of first-degree assault.
Just hours before the shooting, Couch legally purchased the rifle along with around 1,000 rounds of ammunition, according to police reports.
The first shots rang out around 5:30 PM local time on Saturday. Initially, police stated that nine vehicles were struck by gunfire along Interstate 75, later revising the count to 12 vehicles.
The assailant fired from a cliff overlooking the highway, resulting in significant injuries to five individuals, one of whom suffered a gunshot wound to the face. Fortunately, all victims are in stable condition and expected to survive.
London’s mayor indicated that local businesses and churches remained closed on Sunday as the search for Couch continued.
Local residents are being advised to stay alert as the manhunt for the suspect continues.
“Lock your doors,” urged a spokesperson from the Kentucky State Police. “If you have security cameras, monitor them closely, and keep your outdoor lights on.”
As a safety measure, schools in Laurel County and surrounding areas were closed on Monday.
Officials noted that the dense woods in the vicinity are hampering search efforts. While the official search was suspended after dark, officers remained stationed near exit 49 on I-75 to contain the suspect’s movements.
Deputy Gilbert Acciardo described the area as particularly remote, underscoring the challenges law enforcement faces in their efforts.
Upon arrival, first responders reported a chaotic scene with multiple vehicles displaying bullet holes and shattered windows.
