San Antonio is set to launch a transformative $1.4 million grant program aimed at supporting small businesses impacted by city-led construction projects. Presented by the Economic Development Department, this initiative will feature three distinct grants designed to provide essential assistance before, during, and after construction activities.
The most significant component, the Stabilization Construction Grant, allocates $1 million to offer eligible businesses along key streets, including South Alamo and within the Zona Cultural, grants of up to $35,000. To qualify, businesses must demonstrate revenue losses over the past year, with approximately 266 businesses poised to benefit from this funding.
Next, the Mitigation Construction Grant targets businesses gearing up for significant upcoming projects, notably the Marbach Road Streets and Drainage Project set to commence this fall. With grants of $2,000 available for up to 40 businesses, a total of $80,000 has been designated to help cover marketing and signage costs.
Finally, the Accelerate Recovery Grant provides support for businesses along roads where construction has recently concluded, specifically Broadway Street and Bulverde Road. This program, backed by $120,000, will offer $5,000 grants to up to 24 businesses for enhancing their exteriors or interiors, which may include improvements like painting, signage, or seating upgrades.
Applications for the Stabilization and Accelerate Recovery grants are set to open on May 1, while the Mitigation Grant application period begins on June 2. City data indicates that previous construction-related grants have significantly improved survival rates for small businesses, particularly in the food and accommodation sectors.
