Russia has launched a devastating attack on an apartment building in the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuries to 31 others, according to local authorities. The assault, part of a broader wave of strikes that targeted residential areas, employed guided glide bombs on Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, stating, “The targets for Russian bombs include a residential building, a bakery, a stadium… these are assaults on the everyday lives of ordinary people.” This incident comes amid intensifying conflict in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces are encircling the largely devastated town of Vuhledar.
In the aftermath of the strikes in Kharkiv, Zelensky shared images of the damaged residential tower, revealing a significant gash in the structure. He urged international allies to act decisively against the ongoing violence while attending the UN General Assembly, emphasizing Ukraine’s urgent requirement for military support from the United States.
Zelensky stated, “Much discussion at the UN centers on collective security efforts for the future, but immediate action is needed to halt the terror. We require security for a viable future.”
Local officials reported that Russian strikes targeted at least four districts within Kharkiv city. The apartment block had previously been hit earlier in the conflict. Kharkiv’s Mayor Ihor Terekov noted, “It had almost been repaired, with new windows and insulation for the heating season, but was struck again by a KAB glide bomb.”
Recently, Russia has escalated its use of glide bombs—Soviet-era munitions equipped with wings and satellite guidance. These weapons have proven to be both economical and destructive, significantly aiding Russia’s efforts to extend its territorial control in Ukraine. Such bombs were also previously deployed in attacks in Kharkiv in May and reportedly used for the first time in the city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday night.
Ukrainian officials disclosed that Russia conducted seven airstrikes with KAB glide bombs, injuring at least 21 civilians across 13 residential buildings and two educational institutions. Additionally, a separate strike on Zaporizhzhia on Monday night resulted in one fatality and injuries to at least four people, including two children.
Russian troops have made notable progress in eastern Ukraine, tightening their grip on Vuhledar—a coal-mining town located on the southern front of the Donbas region. Reports indicate that Russian forces are attempting to claim the town since the onset of their full-scale invasion. Military sources suggest that Moscow’s troops have reached the outskirts of Vuhledar, while Ukraine’s military has confirmed ongoing attempts to defend their positions.
Furthermore, recent advancements by Russian forces have been reported near Hlyboke, Kupyansk, and Pokrovsk, according to analysis from a US-based think tank. Meanwhile, Ukrainian units have also made progress in the Kursk region, signaling ongoing complexities in the evolving conflict.
