Riot Fest, the iconic music festival dedicated to punk and rock, is making headlines with its recent announcement of relocating back to Douglass Park in Chicago for its 2024 event. Originally set to take place at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview due to permit delays from the Chicago Park District, the festival will occur from September 20-22 at its previous home after an agreement was reached with the Park District.
Riot Fest organizer Mike Petryshyn highlighted the positive working relationship with the Park District and expressed satisfaction with the resolution. Last year’s significant increase in permit costs, which jumped from $300,000 to $700,000, raised concerns, but the festival is now confident in its plans.
Despite ongoing criticism regarding its impact on Douglass Park, local leaders, including Alderwoman Monique L. Scott, emphasize the festival’s benefits, labeling it a "cornerstone of positive impact and opportunity" for the North Lawndale community. Riot Fest is committed to giving back, ensuring that 10% of revenue will be allocated to the park through the Park Enhancement Fund, alongside continuing community initiatives like park cleanups and job fairs.
This year’s lineup features a star-studded roster including Pavement, Beck, Fall Out Boy, and Slayer. Fans can also look forward to performances from other notable artists such as St. Vincent, Public Enemy, and Cypress Hill, among others.
Riot Fest will showcase full album performances with the Offspring playing Smash, Manchester Orchestra presenting Cope, and Mastodon delivering Leviathan. Special sets also include an Operation Ivy tribute and performances led by Bob Marley’s sons, as well as a farewell performance by NOFX each night of the festival.
