Corporate landlords linked to the Make America Great Again movement are opposing rent control in California
LOS ANGELES – The Yes on 33 and No on 34 campaigns have launched a powerful new advertisement titled “CAA is MAGA,” revealing connections between the California Apartment Association (CAA) and the MAGA movement. The CAA, which represents large corporate landlords, is actively working against rent control measures in California and attempting to undermine the efforts of significant healthcare organizations that support these initiatives.
The advertisement highlights how corporate landlords, including high-profile executives, are increasing rent prices to boost their profits while targeting rent control legislation. It draws attention to the financial ties many CAA board members have to the MAGA movement.
As of May 2024, one high-profile executive has contributed over $426,000 to MAGA-related campaign committees, while their company has donated over $1.4 million to the CAA Issues Committee, which is at the forefront of the fight against rent control.
Notable contributions include:
- Co-founder of the Sares-Regis Group contributed $40,000 to Trump Victory.
- The Irvine Company’s chairman donated $25,000 to Trump Victory.
- A key executive from Fuller Enterprises contributed $2,800 to Trump Victory.
- Another board member donated over $54,000 to Trump Victory over multiple years.
- Significant contributions from Sares-Regis and Fuller Enterprises to the CAA Issues Committee, which opposes rent control.
- A CEO from R&V Management donated over $1.3 million to the CAA Issues Committee.
- A CEO from Lyon Living contributed $125,000 to Trump Victory and over $89,000 to the CAA Issues Committee.
The “CAA is MAGA” advertisement will run for two weeks starting August 14th, primarily during prime time on major news networks throughout California.

“The California Apartment Association is driven by wealth from corporate landlords. These landlords are backing the MAGA movement. When you see advertisements opposing rent control, recognize who is financing them. The California Apartment Association is aligned with MAGA. Vote Yes on 33 and No on 34 this November.”
Proposition 33, backed by a coalition of elected officials, labor groups, and healthcare advocates, proposes that “The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.”
