A prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has urged the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, to resign to address the ongoing internal crisis. Ologbondiyan emphasized that Damagun stepping down is essential for implementing necessary reforms and stabilizing the party.
Calls for Damagun’s resignation have intensified, with 60 PDP members from the House of Representatives previously demanding he vacate his position, alleging close ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Ologbondiyan attributed the party’s troubles to Damagun, asserting that to maintain its role as a viable opposition, the acting chairman should return to his previous role as Deputy National Chairman, North.
He advocated for genuine reconciliation within the party, stating that the North-Central zone, which was excluded from leadership after the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu, deserves to have a new national chairman emerge from its ranks.
“There is a clear necessity for the PDP to pursue justice to fulfill its objectives. Damagun’s current leadership undermines the chance for a substantive chairman from the North-Central,” Ologbondiyan stated. He further suggested that if Damagun were to step back into his former position, many of the party’s significant issues could begin to resolve.
