Carla Ward has been named the new head coach of the Republic of Ireland women’s national team, a position she will hold through the 2027 Women’s World Cup campaign. Ward, who previously served as the manager of Aston Villa, takes over from Eileen Gleeson following Ireland’s unsuccessful bid to qualify for Euro 2025.
Ward brings significant experience to her new role, having been part of the United States coaching staff that won gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris under Emma Hayes. She will begin her tenure immediately as the team prepares for its 2025 Nations League campaign, which kicks off with a home match against Turkey at Tallaght Stadium on February 21.
“I am hugely excited to get started with the Ireland women’s national team,” Ward stated. “This is an incredible opportunity to not only lead the national team but also to contribute to the growth of women’s and girls’ football in Ireland. Over the next two-and-a-half years, as we build towards the World Cup, we can truly make a difference.”
Supporting Ward will be assistant coach Alan Mahon, a former Ireland men’s international, and goalkeeping coach Emma Byrne, a former captain and record appearance holder for the women’s national team.
Ward’s appointment comes after Gleeson led Ireland to a promotion in Nations League A and a commendable run in the Euro 2025 play-offs, where they faced a tough two-legged match against Wales.
In a statement, a representative from the Football Association of Ireland expressed excitement over Ward’s appointment. “Bringing in a coach of Carla’s caliber underscores our ambition for the future of our women’s national team. Her passion, dedication, and coaching expertise make her the ideal candidate to help propel the team forward.”
