The House of Representatives is set to hold a crucial security summit aimed at addressing the ongoing threats posed by armed groups throughout the nation. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas made the announcement during Wednesday’s plenary session.
In his remarks, Abbas urged lawmakers to intensify their commitment to delivering democratic benefits to citizens, praising security forces for recent victories against terrorism in Nigeria. “The House of Representatives will convene a high-level legislative security summit in the final quarter of this year to tackle pressing security issues. This summit will unite key stakeholders, including government officials, security agencies, policy analysts, and civil society.”
The summit will focus on legislative reforms to enhance the capabilities of security institutions, improve collaboration between agencies, and leverage intelligence to combat insurgency, banditry, and other security threats. Additionally, discussions will cover community policing, border security, and the integration of advanced technology into national defense strategies.
While recognizing ongoing security challenges, Abbas highlighted the military’s success in neutralizing over 150 terrorists and major bandit leaders, underscoring the government’s dedication to restoring peace through enhanced cooperation with neighboring countries and improved intelligence sharing.
The Speaker emphasized the importance of collaborating with the executive branch to ensure the delivery of democratic benefits to all Nigerians. “While maintaining our independence as a legislative body, we are committed to working in partnership with the executive for the greater good of Nigeria. Our collective efforts are essential in achieving economic stability, enhancing security, and promoting national development.”
Abbas also pointed out the accomplishments of the House prior to its vacation in July, noting that the 10th House introduced 1,351 bills and passed 89, significantly impacting critical sectors, including electricity, healthcare, and financial accountability.
Looking ahead, he stated, “We must sustain our momentum as we prioritize economic reforms, youth empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. The economic challenges our nation faces require immediate legislative action, and the House is dedicated to enacting laws that drive recovery, attract investment, generate employment, and provide vital assistance through focused social welfare programs.”
Abbas commended the recent approval of economic stabilization bills by the Federal Executive Council, which aim to provide tax relief for businesses that create jobs and support vulnerable populations.
