The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the disruption during Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s speech at Oxford University was orchestrated. TMC spokesperson Jayprakash Majumdar criticized the Students’ Federation of India (SFI-UK) for their protests, asserting that Mamata will not be intimidated by such “abuses and insults.”
“This unfortunate incident is not unprecedented. Historically, there have been protests against leaders, like Swami Vivekananda in Chicago. Mamata Banerjee remains focused on advancing Bengal’s interests, regardless of the criticism,” Majumdar stated.
The Trinamool leader questioned the intent behind the SFI’s protests, mentioning the CPM’s diminishing influence in Bengal.
“The SFI’s presence is insignificant in Bengal, yet they choose to protest abroad. This clearly indicates the CPM’s decline in the state. This was a deliberate act, highlighting their emptiness. What significance does SFI in the UK even hold?” he expressed.
During Mamata’s address at Kellogg College, she faced interruptions from a group of students who raised concerns about post-poll violence and the RG Kar College rape and murder case.
The West Bengal Chief Minister was discussing the state’s advancements under TMC and investment prospects.
MAMATA SHOWCASES IMAGE FROM 1990 ATTACK
In response to the heckling, Mamata firmly stated, “This is not a platform for political disputes. You are spreading lies. Go to Bengal and strengthen your political party. First, look at this image of me, showing how there was an attempt on my life.”
Mamata dramatically revealed a black-and-white photograph from the 1990s, displaying her head bandaged due to injuries.
“View this image, showing a moment when someone tried to kill me… I was on the brink of death. These are the consequences of your actions,” she stated, referring to an alleged assault by a CPI(M) worker in August 1990 when she was affiliated with Congress.
A court in Kolkata acquitted the CPM leader Lalu Alam in 2019, who was accused of orchestrating the attack, an event that significantly raised Mamata’s national profile.
Asserting that creating chaos is a “habit” of the Left, Mamata declared, “You motivate me. Didi will always return. Didi is unconcerned by obstacles. She walks with the pride of a Royal Bengal Tiger. If you dare to catch me, then do so!”
