Bollywood icon Tabu emphasizes the increasing prominence of women in global film and television. Her latest role in Dune: Prophecy, inspired by Frank Herbert’s iconic novels, showcases this trend.
Formerly known as Dune: Sisterhood, Tabu highlights the significant contributions of women in the series, notably under the direction of Anna Foerster. She expressed, “Being surrounded, feeling empowered… it’s really wonderful to see this happening.”
Tabu, a respected figure in Hindi cinema, notes that this shift is evident not just in international projects but has also manifested within her home industry. “Women are taking center stage everywhere,” she asserts.
‘I’m still learning so much’
In addition to Dune: Prophecy, Tabu points to her role in the hit Hindi film Crew, featuring a female-led cast including Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon, as part of the broader transformation in cinema.
At 53, she reflects on her peers’ accomplishments, stating, “They have mastery over their craft and a clear understanding of how to manage people—it’s all about people management.” She acknowledges the vital role that years of experience and maturity play in the industry.
Dune: Prophecy, labeled by critics as “a refreshingly different sci-fi led by women at every level,” has thrilled fans in India. Tabu notes that the chance to collaborate with an international ensemble was an exciting prospect.
She shares, “Working with people from diverse cultures like Serbia, Spain, the UK, Ukraine, and Germany was invigorating. It added excitement and depth, both on and off-screen.”
With a career spanning decades, Tabu has starred in acclaimed films such as Life of Pi and A Suitable Boy. However, she remains forward-focused, stating, “I feel like I’m still learning and growing.”
She expresses immense gratitude for the love and respect she’s received from audiences, emphasizing the importance of evolving through her roles, including that of Sister Francesca. “I’m excited to present this character in a new light for viewers,” she remarks.
For Tabu, acting is a dynamic journey of self-discovery. “Acting is a live experience; there’s no luxury of stagnation. Each day on set offers a chance to explore and express oneself,” she concludes.
