In a significant parliamentary address, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra unveiled the government’s policy statement, emphasizing strategies to enhance the economic conditions of citizens and boost state revenue.
During her 58-minute speech, Ms. Paetongtarn, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, detailed plans for extensive debt restructuring, particularly targeting home and car loans, and support for informal debtors without compromising the nation’s financial stability.
To tackle rising costs, the Prime Minister announced initiatives to lower energy prices and public utility fees by revising energy pricing structures and exploring alternative energy sources.
Addressing the controversial digital wallet initiative, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the scheme, with a focus on supporting vulnerable populations.
“Our goal is to ensure that all Thais have fair opportunities to live with dignity,” stated Ms. Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
In response to her remarks, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the opposition People’s Power Party, criticized the Pheu Thai administration for a lack of decisive action on key policy issues since taking office after the elections on May 14, 2023.
“This has been a year of missed opportunities for the people,” he declared, pointing to the challenges faced during Srettha Thavisin’s administration.
Mr. Natthaphong highlighted repeated delays in the digital wallet initiative and inconsistencies with recipient criteria as points of concern.
He also noted that the government has yet to engage suppliers in discussions regarding adjustments to energy cost structures.
Ms. Paetongtarn, who took office after the Constitutional Court removed Mr. Srettha on August 14 due to ethical concerns, has approximately three years left in her term following his exit after 11 months and 21 days.
