Preta Gil, 50, recently opened up about her battle with cancer in her first interview since discovering new tumors in her body. During her conversation, she revealed that she underwent surgery to remove her rectum about a year ago.
“This disease carries a significant stigma. I had my rectum amputated, and I refuse to feel ashamed because that is my reality,” she stated. “Today, I am a stronger Preta in many ways, and I have an even greater desire to live.”
The singer shared her shock upon learning that the cancer had returned. “I went for a routine check-up, thinking it was just a normal visit. Suddenly, I received the unexpected news that my cancer has returned in four different areas. It’s more common than we think for this to happen,” she reflected.
“I’m doing well despite everything, although the initial news was very upsetting,” she expressed. “I am aware that I will be facing six cycles of chemotherapy, with the possibility of radiation therapy afterward. I want to speak openly about this to encourage others not to feel ashamed or alone, and to seek help from those who love them, as everyone reacts differently.”
Preta also recounted a powerful moment with her father, legendary musician Gilberto Gil, 82, who advised her during a recent health crisis. “My father is an evolved human being and approaches the concept of mortality differently than most,” she explained.
She recalled their conversation in the intensive care unit when she was seriously ill due to sepsis last year. “He saw me fighting for my survival and told me that if it became too heavy for me, I should let go. That was an act of love—a son being told it’s okay to leave if it becomes unbearable. That insight struck me as a spark of life, and I realized it was not my time,” she reminisced.
During the interview, Preta also shared that she is in a new relationship. “[My heart] is beating strongly, and I am grateful to be in love with someone,” she revealed, choosing to keep her partner’s identity private. “[This relationship is] bringing me immense joy and happiness. I feel confident in everything—love, the people around me, my doctors, God, and my orixás.”
