WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is set to address the military commencement at West Point, marking his first address of this nature since resuming office.
The Republican leader will deliver his speech to the graduating class on Saturday morning.
During his previous commencement address at West Point in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, he emphasized the importance of remembering soldiers who fought in historical conflicts related to slavery, echoing the nationwide discourse on racial issues following the death of George Floyd.
Trump honored the military academy’s legacy and distinguished alumni, including Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The 2020 ceremony faced criticism as cadets were required to return to campus from home, amidst surging pandemic cases.
This month, Trump visited Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to address the University of Alabama’s graduates, where he combined traditional commencement themes with political commentary, including critiques of Joe Biden’s administration and controversial topics such as transgender athletes.
On Friday, Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks to graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, emphasizing Trump’s focus on ensuring U.S. military deployments are guided by clear objectives, moving away from the “undefined missions” of previous years.
