GEORGETOWN, Guyana – President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has announced the completion of the model for Silica City, Guyana’s pioneering smart and sustainable city initiative.
The announcement was made at the opening of the International Building Exposition 2024 on Thursday evening at the National Stadium in Providence.
This ambitious project aims to combat the effects of climate change and rising sea levels, addressing challenges associated with the expansion of non-coastal urban areas.
“We are progressing towards realizing the dream of Silica City, creating a desirable living environment. Over the past year, we have refined the framework for this innovative city,” stated the President.
The government collaborated with experts to finalize a comprehensive plan for Silica City, which will be revealed during the expo, highlighting cutting-edge technologies and amenities planned for the city.
Silica City is set to become Guyana’s premier location for eco-friendly living, representing a significant leap in the country’s commitment to sustainable and climate-smart development.
“Silica City will be realized by 2030. We are dedicated to engaging with the best planners, drawing insights from the global community. We will learn from the past to ensure our project embodies the essence of our nation,” he emphasized.
The city plans to feature state-of-the-art developments, including smart homes equipped with advanced energy-saving technologies aimed at wastewater, energy, and water management.
“This will be a resilient city, naturally beautiful, modern, and innovative—designed for the future. A city built to last 100 years, showcasing Guyana as a leader in sustainable urban development,” President Ali highlighted.
Silica City will offer recreational parks, community centers, an efficient electricity grid, multi-specialty healthcare facilities, and a thriving environment designed to enhance well-being, productivity, and happiness. It aims to foster opportunities for business innovation, paving the way for an inclusive urban economy and improved living conditions.
