Palang Pracharath Party leader Gen Prawit Wongsuwon will forgo his MP salary and allowances due to his frequent absences from parliamentary sessions, confirmed the party’s secretary-general.
Paiboon Nititawan announced that Gen Prawit has formally communicated with the House secretary-general, indicating that he will not receive his salary and allowances starting from October 1.
Additionally, he requested details regarding his accrued salary and allowances to facilitate a refund, according to Mr. Paiboon.
“This decision serves as a precedent for MPs who bear significant responsibilities and may find themselves needing to take extended leaves from parliament,” he stated.
Gen Prawit has filed another leave request for parliament on Thursday but has assured that he will increase his attendance in the future, according to the secretary-general.
This action comes amid mounting complaints about Gen Prawit’s attendance record.
House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha has sanctioned an inquiry into the retired general’s absences and the potential ethical implications, following a request from Prompong Nopparit, a former spokesman for the coalition-leading Pheu Thai Party.
Mr. Prompong noted that Gen Prawit has participated in only 11 parliamentary sessions since July 3 of last year.
At 79 years old, Gen Prawit’s infrequent attendance has been attributed to health issues and other commitments.
MPs are entitled to a monthly salary of 113,560 baht, along with comprehensive medical, pension, and welfare benefits. Additional allowances can accumulate significantly for MPs engaged in extensive committee work.
Like fellow 2014 coup leader Prayut Chan-o-cha, Gen Prawit resides in complimentary housing at the 1st Infantry Regiment in Bangkok’s Phaya Thai district. The facilities also house the Five Border Provinces Forest Preservation Foundation, a military-affiliated organization that he leads, where he conducts much of his political activities.
