In a significant move against unchecked scam operations, the Provincial Electricity Authority has cut power to border regions in Myanmar. This action targets numerous scam centers that have proliferated in these areas.
The disconnection was initiated from the PEA control center in Bangkok around 9 AM on Wednesday.
The electricity supply was halted at five key locations:
- Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge-Myawaddy
- Ban Huay Muang-Myawaddy
- Three Pagodas-Payathongzu
- Ban Mueang Daeng-Tachileik
- First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge-Tachileik
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul oversaw the operation, stating that the government was compelled to act as the electricity supplied was being misused, posing security risks to Thailand.
He mentioned that affected power users must address the issues directly and noted the Foreign Affairs Ministry would engage with Myanmar’s government to expedite solutions.
Additionally, Mr. Anutin indicated plans to revise a prior cabinet resolution on Thai electricity sales to neighboring areas, aiming to implement stricter regulations to combat scams originating near the border.
This decisive action follows persistent appeals from the Chinese government, urging Thailand to cut resources to scam organizations that have victimized its citizens. Reports indicate that a Chinese actor was lured into these criminal networks by a fellow compatriot.
