The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced an extension of voting hours in the ongoing Local Government Elections, responding to unexpected challenges including the late arrival of sensitive materials in specific polling units.
In a recent statement, PLASIEC’s Head of Media emphasized the necessity of the extension to ensure that all voters can participate in the electoral process. The elections, initially scheduled from 8 AM to 3 PM, will now continue until 5 PM in the affected areas.
The commission highlighted that delays were caused by the late arrival of essential materials, and they are actively working to address these concerns. Additionally, technical issues with the Voter Accreditation Software have been resolved, allowing Presiding Officers to revert to manual registers to facilitate smooth voting.
PLASIEC has committed to maintaining the credibility of the elections, assuring the public that every vote will count and that no eligible voter will be disenfranchised. They stated, “We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public, and we remain dedicated to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.”
Currently, eleven political parties are competing in this election across over 300 wards in the 17 Local Government Areas. Major contenders include candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, and the Labour Party.
Voter feedback has shown concern regarding the functionality of the Voter Verification System and shortages of election materials in some locations, raising fears of potential disenfranchisement. PLASIEC officials have reassured voters that steps are being taken to ensure everyone eligible to vote can do so without issue.
Further updates on the election process will be provided as developments occur.
