A recent survey indicates that a significant majority of Thais believe former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra should refrain from taking any governmental role in the administration led by his daughter, Paetongtarn “Ung Ing” Shinawatra. Conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration, the poll highlights public sentiments surrounding Thaksin’s potential influence on the new government.
The survey, carried out via telephone interviews with 1,310 participants aged 18 and above across various demographics on August 20-21, sought to understand public opinion regarding Thaksin’s involvement in Paetongtarn’s administration.
When asked about the likelihood of Paetongtarn governing without her father’s influence, the responses were as follows:
– 59.01% deemed it absolutely impossible
– 15.42% considered it very unlikely
– 14.96% felt it was fairly likely
– 9.77% thought it was very likely
– 0.84% had no opinion
Regarding Thaksin’s potential role, opinions varied:
– 37.79% believe he should have no official position but could offer unofficial advice as a father
– 28.85% think he should not hold a position but can provide advice from “behind the curtain”
– 26.95% feel he should have no position or advice, allowing the premier to lead independently
– 6.03% support Thaksin holding an official role to advise on national matters
– 0.38% were undecided
When asked about Thaksin’s anticipated role in the new government, the responses were:
– 39.39% predict he will stay “behind the curtain” to assist Paetongtarn
– 31.39% believe he will not have any official role but will provide paternal advice
– 18.70% think he will let her manage independently
– 9.08% indicate he may assume an official post
– 0.92% were uncertain
