The Anambra State Police Command has reported the successful neutralization of a suspected gunman following a fierce gun battle with armed assailants in the Igbo Ukwu/Ezinifite Uga region of the state.
According to a statement from the police, the confrontation occurred around 11:30 PM on Sunday during a routine patrol. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga outlined that officers encountered armed individuals in a black Prado Jeep and engaged them in a gunfight, resulting in the death of one suspect while others managed to escape.
On the night of September 29, 2024, police forces, acting on intelligence about the presence of armed men, approached the area and initiated a tactical response. During the operation, they successfully neutralized one miscreant and recovered a range of illegal weaponry and items, including two AK-47 rifles, a pump-action shotgun, and multiple magazines filled with live ammunition.
The police also confiscated various criminal paraphernalia, such as armored vests, face caps, and charms. A clearance operation is currently underway in the vicinity, with ongoing efforts to secure the area. The police have promised further updates as the situation develops.
In related news, there has been heightened concern following a violent attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Centre on September 7, where unidentified gunmen killed a police corporal and injured several others, leading to public outcry from community leaders including the Regent of Oba, Noel Ezenwa.
