Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the tragic killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, the priest in charge of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, located in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The confirmation comes from the Public Relations Officer of the State Command, who reported that the Commissioner of Police has launched a manhunt for the assailants responsible for this heinous act, which features signs of a struggle. The Commissioner has emphasized the urgency of uncovering those behind this disturbing event.
According to a statement from the Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan, Father Sylvester was kidnapped on the evening of March 4, 2025, and was found dead on Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The motives behind his assassination remain unclear.
The Chancellor of the Archdiocese expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Father Sylvester as a devoted servant who tirelessly spread messages of peace and hope. His passing has created a significant void in the community, prompting calls for collective prayer and remembrance.
