Pharmacy United In Action For A Healthier World

Published

on

Pharmacists from across the Virgin Islands have been called to unite in action for a healthier world as the Territory prepares to observe World Pharmacist Day tomorrow September 23.

Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services, Mrs. Gracia Wheatley-Smith said the day is being used to recognise pharmacists for their role in providing optimum pharmacy care to ensure the best possible health outcomes.

“We want to celebrate and acknowledge our hard working pharmacist who have been dedicated to the people of this Territory over the years.  Especially during the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria and more recently with the pandemic making sure people had accesses to life saving medications,” Mrs. Wheatley-Smith said.

The Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services is encouraging persons to build a relationship with their pharmacist and the take the time out to speak with them regarding their medication, usage and possible side effects.  She also recommends as much as possible for persons to fill their prescription in one location which enables that pharmacy to have their records and history and be able to better flag possible drug interactions.

“Remember medicines are foreign entities that you take into your bodies, therefore anything can happen, they react with food, drink, other medications even the sunlight.  Love your pharmacist and build a relationship with your pharmacist,” Mrs. Wheatley-Smith concluded.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development is committed to ensuring that all aspects of the environment with the potential to negatively impact the health of the population are managed efficiently to enable all persons in the BVI to attain and maintain optimal health and well-being.

Financial crimes council gets more members

Published

on

Two new members will be added to the National Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Coordinating Council if a recently passed bill gets the governor’s assent.

The House of Assembly passed the Proceeds of Criminal Conduct (Amendment) Act, 2022 on Sept. 27.

The bill adds the financial secretary and a member of the Committee of Law Enforcement Agencies to the existing eight-member council.

Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley, who is also chairman of the NAMLTFCC, said when bringing the bill for its second reading that it was a simple “oversight” that those two members were not previously included in updated legislation.

“[The council] is a very important agency which is able to confront the scourge of money laundering and terrorist financing, and to ensure that the BVI does not become a safe haven for such,” he said. “It is imperative that this committee function and function well to ensure that we get a good [Caribbean Financial Action Task Force] evaluation.”

The bill passed with no debate but with amendments on Sept. 27.

Other bills

Dr. Wheatley also brought two bills for first readings on Sept. 27: the Banks and Trust Companies (Amendment) Act, 2022, and the Financial Services Commission (Amendment) Act, 2022.

The HOA closed on Sept. 27 without setting a date to return. When the sitting resumes, legislators plan to debate the Liquor Licences Act, 2019 and the Jury Act, 2022.

Though the Police Act, 2019 — which would launch a major overhaul of the police service — was originally included on the Order Paper, the premier successfully moved to shift it to a later sitting.
