Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to address unresolved issues, including Kashmir, during a recent ‘Youm-e-Tashakur’ (Day of Thanks) event dedicated to honoring the military. He urged both nations to engage as peaceful neighbors and learn from past conflicts.
Shehbaz pointed out that three wars between India and Pakistan have yielded no resolution, underscoring the necessity for talks to achieve lasting peace in the region. “Without resolution of our issues, we cannot have peace in this part of the world,” he stated.
India has made it clear that discussions will focus on the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and counterterrorism efforts. “If peace comes, we can also cooperate in counterterrorism,” the Prime Minister added during his address, attended by senior military officials.
Recent tensions escalated with India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7, which targeted terror infrastructure in response to a deadly attack in Pahalgam. Following India’s operations, Pakistan attempted to retaliate, leading to a series of cross-border military actions. An understanding was reached on May 10 to de-escalate the situation, ending four intense days of confrontation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed gratitude to international partners who facilitated the ceasefire, particularly acknowledging a significant diplomatic intervention.
The day began with a ceremonial 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals, coupled with special prayers and nationwide rallies in support of the armed forces. Earlier, the Prime Minister marked ‘Youm-e-Tashakur’ by hoisting the national flag at the PM House in Islamabad.
“Pakistan is a peaceful country but retains the right to defend itself,” he remarked, reflecting on the recent military engagements with India.
He acknowledged the Pakistani armed forces for their decisive response, which he described as a “golden chapter” in the nation’s military history, and visited the family of Squadron Leader Usman Yousaf, who lost his life in the conflict. He also inspected the health status of soldiers and civilians injured in the clashes.
Shehbaz noted that the collective efforts and resilience of the military and the nation during recent conflicts are extraordinary. This marks the second observation of ‘Youm-e-Tashakur’ since the ceasefire, initially celebrated with nationwide tributes following military actions.
President Asif Ali Zardari reinforced the country’s commitment to its sovereignty and territorial integrity, asserting that Pakistan will never compromise on its core national interests.
