Recent clashes between the Myanmar government forces and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) have ignited an urgent exodus, posing threats to civilians on both sides of the border, according to security officials.
To assess the situation, the Naresuan taskforce of the Thai army conducted aerial surveillance over the border region in Tak province on Saturday, following reports of skirmishes near Myanmar army bases.
Fighting has been reported just 800 meters from Nong Bua, with additional incidents noted near the Kyra Piao Kong base, a mere 1.5 kilometers from Tha Song Yang district in Tak.
Maj Gen Maitri Chupreecha, commander of the Naresuan taskforce, expressed concerns for the safety and property of individuals on both sides, highlighting the risk of potential cross-border incursions.
As a result of the ongoing conflict, 545 Myanmar nationals have fled to Thailand, where they are being sheltered in two temporary safe zones.
Military and border police are providing essential assistance and humanitarian aid to the refugees. The Naresuan taskforce has mobilized resources to supply food, clothing, and other necessities to units supporting those displaced by the conflict.
This latest development coincides with increasing concerns among Thai security officials in Tak about a rise in victims escaping from scam operations in Myawaddy as the crackdown on crime intensifies.
In January, many healthcare facilities designed to aid refugees along the Thai-Myanmar border were forced to close due to funding freezes, leading officials to transport critically ill patients to alternative medical facilities.
