A recent survey conducted by local authorities reveals that Nampally mandal in Hyderabad district leads the way in structures encroaching on the Musi River. The evaluation identifies a total of 2,166 encroachments within the river bed, with 604 of these located in Nampally, accounting for 28% of all identified structures. Together with Bahadurpura, which has 527 structures, these two areas constitute a significant 52% of total encroachments.
Other notable areas include Rajendranagar in Ranga Reddy district, which has 300 encroachments; Himayatnagar in Hyderabad with 263 structures; and Uppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri with 236. Additional encroachments are present in Amberpet (64), Asif Nagar (14), Charminar (3), Saidabad (70), Ghatkesar (2), Medipally (1), and Gandipet (32), according to the released data.
Remarkably, Abdullapurmet is the only mandal reporting zero encroachments. Hyderabad district has the highest number of encroachments overall, totaling 1,595, followed by Ranga Reddy with 332 and Medchal-Malkajgiri with 239 structures within the river bed.
A comprehensive enumeration has revealed a total of 10,200 structures within both the river bed and adjacent buffer zones. The government has pledged compensation for those living in the river bed with promises of double-bedroom housing. Residents in the buffer zone will receive compensation according to the Land Acquisition Act, in addition to the 2BHK housing offered by the Chief Minister.
In an effort to expedite the redevelopment project, Collectors from all three affected districts have formed teams to identify and document the structures and inhabitant details. A total of 25 operational teams — 16 in Hyderabad, four in Ranga Reddy, and five in Medchal-Malkajgiri — are currently conducting a door-to-door survey to collect names, Aadhaar IDs, and other relevant information on residents. These surveys have taken place in areas including Chaderghat, Golconda, Langar Houz, and Kothapet. Tensions arose at Chaitanyapuri and New Maruthi Nagar, where residents resisted the marking of their homes and hindered the officials from proceeding with their assessments.
