ECNETNews, New York, NY, March 25, 2025: Over $38,000 has been raised to support the legal defense of Guyana-born social media activist Melissa ‘Melly Mel’ Atwell, who is scheduled to appear before a U.S. immigration judge on March 28, 2025, for her first hearing.
A review of her fundraising page indicates a total of $38,550 raised toward a $100,000 goal, with 518 donations recorded. The largest contribution is $2,200 from a supporter, making it a significant show of support.
Atwell is set to appear virtually before Judge Richard C. Jacobs at 8:30 AM, according to U.S. immigration court records. While previous reports indicated her hearing was on June 25, updated records now confirm the hearing will take place this Friday.
The activist, recognized for her outspoken commentary on issues of governance and alleged corruption in Guyana, was reportedly detained by U.S. Homeland Security officials last week. She is currently held in a federal immigration facility in Louisiana, connected to immigration-related matters.
In response to public concerns regarding the situation, Guyana’s Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, denied any involvement from the Guyana government in Atwell’s arrest. During a recent address, he affirmed that while he had previously served Atwell with a libel suit, her current detention falls under the jurisdiction of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“To clarify, the Government of Guyana did not arrest or detain Melissa Atwell,” Nandlall stated, emphasizing that ICE is responsible for handling immigration enforcement and investigations.
Supporters of Atwell, particularly within the Guyanese diaspora, have organized protests alleging political persecution and calling for her release. Despite the ongoing controversy, Atwell’s legal team remains determined to mount a robust defense as she approaches her upcoming legal proceedings.
