High Schoolers LLC, controlled by the legendary hip-hop duo Outkast, has initiated a federal lawsuit against the Atlanta electronic dance music group known as ATLiens. The lawsuit claims that Outkast originated the term “ATLiens” and has held the trademark since 1996, alleging that the EDM duo has used this trademark without proper authorization.
According to the legal complaint, ATLiens registered their trademark in 2020, asserting use of the name since 2012—well after the release of Outkast’s acclaimed 1996 album, ATLiens. High Schoolers LLC contends that ATLiens’ trademark registration is hindering their ability to secure registrations for their established ATLIENS mark.
The lawsuit also alleges that ATLiens deliberately adopted the name to capitalize on the significant fame and recognition associated with Outkast’s ATLiens album, song, and trademark.
Through this legal action, High Schoolers LLC is seeking a court order to prevent ATLiens from utilizing the “ATLiens” trademark and is requesting the cancellation of the duo’s trademark registration, among other measures.
An attorney representing High Schoolers LLC stated, “This is a basic brand protection issue. Efforts to resolve this matter amicably were unfortunately unsuccessful. Outkast had to file suit in order to safeguard the valuable ATLIENS name and trademark that it has developed and used for nearly 30 years.”
