A former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has publicly sought forgiveness from Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any past grievances during his time as governor.
While delivering a goodwill message at the celebration of Igbinedion’s 90th birthday in Benin, Oshiomhole described Igbinedion as a guiding figure and commended his significant contributions to society. “You brought together people from all parts of the country; North, South, East, and West, and across political and religious divides,” he stated.
Oshiomhole acknowledged the critical support he received from Igbinedion during his political journey, particularly in 2007 and 2008, crediting it as instrumental in his rise to the governorship of Edo State. He expressed appreciation for Igbinedion’s counsel over the years, recognizing both public and private guidance.
“As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done things incorrect during my tenure as governor. At 90, it is only fitting that I ask for your forgiveness for any actions that may have caused you discomfort,” he remarked.
Drawing an analogy between Igbinedion’s extensive influence and a parent managing multiple children, he noted that frustration can arise from such dynamics. “That is the challenge of having so many children; you have a variety of personalities, some of whom inevitably cause frustration,” he added.
Oshiomhole emphasized his desire for reconciliation, stating, “On your 90th birthday, I ask for your forgiveness, and I pray that you grant it.” He added a lighthearted reflection on parenthood, acknowledging the challenges that come with raising children.
He also praised Igbinedion’s legacy of visionary leadership, highlighting his role in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other ventures that have brought international recognition to the country.
