Dialogue and cooperation among Parliaments in science, technology, and innovation are crucial for the collective good, stated Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva on October 14, 2024. He emphasized the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges.
Leading the Indian Parliamentary Delegation, Speaker Birla highlighted the conference’s theme, “Harnessing science, technology and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future.”
Birla expressed optimism that forums like the IPU could facilitate inclusive global development through collaborative action plans. He underscored the need for robust regulatory frameworks in technology, prioritizing data privacy and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring equitable technology benefits.
During his address, he called on Parliaments worldwide to commit to fair distributions of advancements in science and technology, urging them to leverage technology responsibly.
He also referenced the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for the convergence of technological progress and scientific discovery for shared global benefit.
Highlighting India’s achievements, Birla noted that the country’s renewable energy capacity surged from 76 GW to 203 GW over the past decade. He pointed to initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Mission and the International Solar Alliance as evidence of India’s dedication to combating climate change.
The IPU, established in 1889, serves as the world’s first multilateral political organization, providing a platform for national Parliaments to collaborate on pressing global issues.
