British composer-producer and cellist Oliver Coates announces his highly anticipated new album, Throb, Shiver, Arrow of Time, set to release on October 18. This album serves as a formal follow-up to 2020’s Skins n Slime, as Coates continues to push the boundaries of music following his contributions to soundtracks for films such as Aftersun and The Stranger.
Coates describes the album as exploring the theme of “inaccurate transmissions from our memories, overlaid with emotions from other sources.” He reflects on his unique approach to the cello, which he considers a melancholic instrument infused with an ethereal spirit. By utilizing digital processes to manipulate sound frequency and time, he aims to enhance the instrument’s qualities, sometimes transforming it into what he calls “discarded debris” while at other times focusing on maximizing the immediacy of performance.
The album features collaborations with Malibu, Chrysanthemum Bear, and Faten Kanaan, adding to its rich soundscape. Notably, a portion of the album’s proceeds will benefit the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland, an organization dedicated to fostering engagement with traditional Scottish music and culture.
