A former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has credited the strategic approach of governor-elect Monday Okpebholo as a pivotal factor in his success during the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.
In an interview on a political program, Oshiomhole addressed concerns regarding Okpebholo’s limited media presence, asserting that the candidate’s absence from television debates and interviews was part of a well-thought-out strategy.
“Our strategy was effective, which is reflected in the people’s voting patterns,” he stated. He elaborated that communicating in a relatable manner often resonates more deeply with voters than high-profile media appearances.
“Engaging directly with the electorate has proven to be more impactful than traditional media,” he noted, emphasizing that Okpebholo’s choice to focus on direct communication was beneficial.
When asked about his visibility as part of the campaign, Oshiomhole maintained that his priority was to emphasize Okpebholo’s attributes and vision. He stated, “I highlighted the qualities of Monday, ensuring he connected with voters and articulated his plans for change.”
Oshiomhole dismissed the notion that television appearances are essential for campaign success, stating, “Many TV hosts overestimate the significance of appearances. It’s about effective communication, not merely media exposure.” He also pointed out that radio may serve as a more effective medium in reaching voters in Edo State.
The victory of Okpebholo was confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, reporting that the APC candidate secured 291,667 votes. His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, garnered 247,274 votes, while Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party received 22,763 votes.
This victory marks a significant return to power for the APC in Edo State, following their loss in 2020 when Governor Godwin Obaseki defected to the PDP amid a fallout with Oshiomhole. Obaseki, whose tenure concludes in November 2024, was a strong supporter of Ighodalo in the recent elections.
