The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans for a collaborative initiative with the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) titled “Operation Show Me Your Driver’s Licence.”
This announcement was made during a recent courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of OGIRS. The Sector Commander acknowledged the positive relationship between the FRSC and OGIRS but emphasized the prevalence of unlicensed car owners, which has led to decreased road tax revenues.
The enforcement exercise will soon be launched, mandating drivers to visit OGIRS for their driver’s licence payments. This initiative also aims to eliminate existing backlogs in the issuance of licences.
The OGIRS Chairman expressed eagerness to work with the FRSC in implementing road checks to ensure that all vehicle owners have valid licences and comply with government regulations. He noted that OGIRS has its own initiatives to raise awareness regarding timely tax payments through media outreach.
Moreover, the Chairman called for improvements in the processing times for driver’s licence issuance, highlighting the need for prompt service delivery to car owners. He reassured that this joint enforcement strategy is designed to enhance revenue generation for national development, not to penalize citizens.
In addition, the Director of Other Taxes at OGIRS emphasized the necessity for increased production of number plates to facilitate availability for car owners at the point of sale.
This collaborative effort aims to bolster compliance with licensing regulations and improve tax revenue in Ogun State, marking a significant advancement in road safety and fiscal responsibility.
