ECNETNews, Grenada, October 1, 2024: A police officer in Grenada is set to appear in court later this month facing serious sexual offense charges, including incest.
Corporal Nigel Joseph, a member of the Royal Grenada Police Force’s Special Services Unit, appeared in Sauteurs Magistrate’s Court on September 23, 2024. He faces 15 charges of sexual offenses, including the alleged incestuous relationship with one of his daughters. Joseph, 48, arrived at the court wearing a blue and white shirt and black pants, covering his face with a red bandana.
Arrested on September 21, 2024, Joseph has been granted bail set at EC$50,000 with two sureties. His bail conditions include surrendering travel documents, relocating from St. Patrick, weekly reporting to the Hermitage Police Station, and avoiding contact with the victim. Additionally, he must obtain court permission for any travel outside Grenada and notify authorities of any plans to visit Carriacou.
Joseph’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 28, 2024. He has been suspended from active duty while the case is under review.
The serious allegations against Joseph are raising alarms over the prevalence of incest cases in Grenada. Senior legal officials have highlighted an increase in such offenses during recent judicial assessments.
Notably, this case echoes a 2016 incident in which another police officer was sentenced to 15 years for incest, underscoring a troubling pattern within the law enforcement community.
If convicted of incest involving a minor under the age of 13, Joseph could face up to 30 years in prison. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred in River Antoine and Mt. Rose regions of St. Andrew and St. Patrick.
