The Odisha Director General of Police (DGP), Y.B. Khurania, has initiated a formal inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the suspicious death of a suspected ganja smuggler in Kandhamal district. This decision was made on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
In an official statement, the police confirmed that the Odisha CID Crime Branch will spearhead the investigation into this troubling incident.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajat Kumar Ray has been assigned to lead the inquiry concerning the death of the individual, identified as Jyestha Bandaki.
In connection with the case, Kandhamal Superintendent of Police (SP) Suvendu Kumar Patra suspended two police officers and relieved three home guards of their duties on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Family members and local residents have voiced accusations against the police, claiming their involvement in Bandaki’s demise. The deceased’s body was discovered near Danganamu Ghat, falling under the jurisdiction of Gochapada Police Station, on September 26, 2024. Bandaki’s younger brother, Kanistha, reported that the victim and a friend were traveling on a motorcycle when they were pursued by police.
According to Kanistha, “My brother’s friend, who managed to escape, recounted that a police vehicle collided with their motorcycle. After my brother fell, the police assaulted him and ultimately caused his death at the scene. They later abandoned his body in the ghat.”
In contrast, Kandhamal police stated that the officers were suspended due to non-compliance with established operating procedures.
