Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has issued an apology to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force following an incident that occurred on February 17.
In a statement released to the media, Obasa condemned the attack on security officers at the Assembly, describing it as “unfortunate.” His apology coincides with his return to the Assembly complex, where he declared that he has resumed his duties as Speaker.
“On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I sincerely apologize to the security agencies for the embarrassment caused and specifically for the assault on the DSS operatives that was widely circulated in videos,” Obasa stated.
He emphasized the importance of the security agencies, noting their vital role in ensuring the safety of lives and property in and around the Assembly and across Lagos State. Obasa acknowledged that the Assembly had requested additional support from the security agencies on that day.
“It is regrettable that security operatives of the DSS had to experience this in our State Assembly. I apologize unreservedly on behalf of the entire Assembly. We have always maintained a cordial and respectful relationship with security agencies and sought their assistance when necessary to uphold law and order,” he added.
Obasa expressed hope that the recent incident would not harm the longstanding positive relationship between the Assembly and security agencies. He pleaded for an amicable resolution for those charged in connection with the assault, aiming to strengthen their partnership for the peace of Lagos State.
Obasa’s return follows his impeachment on January 13 by a two-thirds majority while he was on holiday in the United States, ending his ten-year tenure. He was accused of high-handedness and financial misappropriation, leading to the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.
Obasa has rejected the impeachment, claiming it did not adhere to proper procedures, and has taken legal action. On February 13, Assembly members passed a vote of confidence in the new Speaker amid ongoing political pressures.
On Thursday, Obasa arrived at the Assembly complex with his supporters, declaring that he had reclaimed his seat and presided over a plenary attended by four members. Additionally, three Assembly staff members charged with assaulting DSS operatives have been arraigned and subsequently granted bail.
