On Thursday, the government confirmed that there is currently no proposal to increase the salaries and allowances for Supreme Court and High Court judges during a session in the Rajya Sabha.
The last adjustments to their salaries, allowances, and pensions occurred in 2017.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced in a written reply that “Presently, no proposal for enhancing pay, allowances, and pension for the judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts is under consideration of the government.”
The salaries and pensions for judges are governed by The Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1958, and The High Court Judges (Salary and Conditions of Services) Act, 1954.
The latest revision of salaries, pension, and allowances for higher judiciary was implemented from January 1, 2016, following the government’s enactment of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations.
Currently, the Chief Justice of India receives a monthly salary of Rs 2.80 lakh, while judges of the Supreme Court and Chief Justices of High Courts earn Rs 2.50 lakh monthly. Additionally, High Court judges are compensated with Rs 2.25 lakh per month.
The government has also announced plans to establish the 8th Pay Commission.
