The Nigerian military has fallen three places in the latest global military ranking for 2024, now positioned at 39th out of 145 countries. This decline from 36th in 2023 and 35th in 2022 occurs despite recent acquisitions of fighter jets and reported successes against terrorism.
In the African context, Nigeria has slipped from third to fourth place among its counterparts. The United States remains the top-ranked military for the 18th year in a row, noted for its strong resource and financial capabilities. Following the U.S. are Russia, China, and India, while South Korea rounds out the top five.
The report highlights that 60 factors were analyzed to determine each country’s PowerIndex score. For 2024, Nigeria’s score stands at 0.5619, with a perfect score being 0.0000. In Africa, Egypt holds the top military position, followed by Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.
When approached for comment, a military spokesperson stated they were not aware of the ranking and could not provide further insights. The implications of this ranking could affect Nigeria’s military strategy and global standing, making it a significant topic for analysis.
