Nigerians Unite to Support Visually Impaired Couple Facing Eviction in Abuja
A visually impaired couple, John and Janet Paul, have garnered significant attention in Nigeria after they were allegedly issued a quit notice by their landlady due to their disabilities. The couple, who had lived peacefully in their rented apartment in Abuja for years, reported that their landlady pressured them to vacate after discovering their blindness.
In an emotional account, John Paul expressed the challenges they have faced: “Things have been very difficult for us. Our landlady has been pressuring us to leave her house and has made it clear that she doesn’t want to live with blind people.” He firmly stated that they are not behind on rent, stating, “She served us a quit notice last month, claiming she wanted to renovate the house. However, finding another place to stay will cost us a lot of money, which we cannot afford.”
The couple’s struggles have sparked outrage across social media, prompting many Nigerians to rally in support. Citizens have called for assistance and condemned discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
One social media user advocated for a crowdfunding initiative, emphasizing the need for compassion: “To the landlady, please note God is the landlord of us all. Allowing them to live in your apartment for free would be a true act of kindness.”
Another user expressed the need to challenge discrimination against people with disabilities, stating, “Discrimination against people living with disabilities should be eschewed in every form.”
Several individuals have come forward with offers of assistance, reflecting the community’s solidarity. One supporter remarked, “Blindness is not a crime, and nobody wishes to be blind. Be kind to them.”
