The Nigeria women’s cricket national team has made a significant leap in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 rankings, rising from 28th to 24th position globally, and securing the sixth spot in Africa. This remarkable advancement is attributed to the achievements of the U-19 women’s team at the recent ICC T20 Women’s World Cup Africa Qualifier held in Kigali, Rwanda, where Nigeria secured Africa’s ticket to the 2025 World Cup.
Earlier this year, the Nigerian women’s senior team was ranked 26th in the world following their bronze medal performance at the African Games in Ghana. The Nigeria Cricket Federation highlights that the ICC rankings reflect the performance of countries over a specified period, not solely focused on the senior national team.
In the African context, South Africa continues to lead despite slipping from fifth to sixth globally. The rankings also see Zimbabwe at 14th, Namibia in 17th, Uganda at 18th, Tanzania in 19th, and Rwanda at 26th. Other notable positions include Kenya at 28th, Botswana at 44th, Sierra Leone at 45th, and Malawi at 54th.
In the men’s T20 rankings, Nigeria’s team remains in 36th place, ranking as the seventh-best nation in Africa. India continues to dominate the men’s category, followed closely by Australia and the West Indies.
