The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has initiated discussions with the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Garcete, to activate the Bilateral Air Service Agreement between Nigeria and Brazil, paving the way for direct flights.
This information was shared in a statement issued by the minister’s media aide, Tunde Moshood. The discussions come in the wake of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2018, aimed at enhancing air connectivity and fostering economic cooperation between the two nations.
During the talks, both Keyamo and the ambassador underlined the necessity for updated BASA arrangements that align with the current dynamics of the aviation industry.
The strategic meeting follows a prior engagement between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in February 2024, where both leaders agreed to revitalize BASA arrangements, acknowledging the cultural and economic ties binding Nigeria and Brazil.
Emphasizing the significance of direct flights, the ambassador noted the feasibility of launching 4 to 5 flights per week, stating, “The introduction of direct flights will spur considerable economic growth between our countries.” He also highlighted the importance of finalizing the Open Skies Agreement to facilitate these proposed services.
Keyamo expressed appreciation for the ambassador’s visit and shared optimism regarding the economic potential of the BASA. He remarked, “There are numerous similarities between Nigeria and Brazil, and the activation of these flights will not only boost trade but also enhance cultural and social exchanges.”
Once finalized, Air Peace and Caverton will be designated to operate the newly established route. Both nations have agreed to form committees to draft and conclude the new BASA arrangements. Additionally, the ambassador has invited Keyamo to visit Brazil for the formal signing of the agreement, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria-Brazil relations.
With the implementation of this agreement, the Nigerian aviation sector is poised for substantial growth and an expanded global presence.
